The Silence Between Raindrops

Ahmadur Rahman Choudhury

The rain didn’t ask permission—

it simply arrived,

soft as a secret

spilled across the windowsill.

I watched it gather

in the cracks of the pavement,

like memories pooling

where no one walks anymore.

A sparrow blinked at me

from the edge of a broken fence,

its feathers heavy with questions

I couldn’t answer.

Inside, the kettle hummed

a lullaby for no one.

The clock ticked

like a heart unsure of its rhythm.

I thought of you—

not your face,

but the way your absence

folds into the silence

between raindrops.

The title reflects the rhythm of raindrops, which can be modeled as intervals in time. Just as silence exists between beats in music, the pauses between raindrops can be seen as negative space—an essential part of the pattern. Mathematically, this relates to the concept of sequences and intervals, where absence is as meaningful as presence.
